The Energy Transition and Generator Efficiency

Until just a few years ago, few gave thought to the fuel consumption of generators. Yet in industries such as construction, infrastructure, and pipeline welding, generators often run all day long—sometimes even 24/7.
In reality, most of the time only a fraction of the generator’s full capacity is actually needed. The result? A significant mismatch between running hours and actual energy demand, leading to very poor fuel efficiency.
This inefficient use means excessive fuel consumption relative to the electricity actually used—resulting in a needlessly high CO₂ footprint.
An Energy Storage System (ESS) is essentially a large battery that stores electrical energy generated by a generator, solar panels, or the grid—so it can be used at a later time.
The most straightforward application is with solar energy. Solar panels generate the most electricity during the day, often producing more power than is immediately needed. The excess energy can either be fed back into the grid or stored in a battery system for later use.
With generators, the benefit is different. Generators operate with much lower fuel efficiency when running below their nominal load. In these cases, the battery system ensures that the generator:
